What a GREAT SHIP and Great Crews. I served two separate tours on BLAKELY. Was part of the decom crew. Whenever I flew into Philly, I used to look for her at the pier and get a knot in my stomach. Started with MSC Gaines as an MSSA. Returned as an MS1, qualified ESWS. Made E7 in 10 years thanks to the great ship & shipmates!

I was electrical officer, DCA and 1stLT from Jan 77 through May 80. Had the pleasure of my retirement ceremony at the Naval War College two weekd ago. The guest speaker was Capt Jim Fitsimonds (Navigator), and our shipmate Capt. Bob Conrad (CICO)was in attendance as well, and we shared some stories from the ship. Bob sent me to the web site via e-mail. There are plenty of names in the guest book I remember, particularly Chief Ridenhour and Gary Zimmerman. Hope to see more. All the best to everyone. I am Vice Admiral Blakely's great granddaughter. For years I have heard my mother's tales of her grandfather's exploits in the North Atlantic. With the advent of the internet, it is only recently I have searched for his history. It touches me greatly to hear his story & of those comrades who served aboard his namesake ship. I understand there is a reunion in 2002. I would be honored to be a guest & meet some of the men & women who served on the FF-1072. If anyone has any stories about Charles Adams Blakely, I am all ears! Thank you for sharing & thank you more for serving our country.

Hi to all who sailed the mighty battle frigate Blakely. I served onboard the Blakely from 87-90. I reported onboard as a YNSR and currently a YNC assigned to NRC Port Hueneme CA. I will never forget the great times I had on the ship and the great people I served with, it was my first assignment in the Navy, what a great place to start a Naval Career! Master Chief Tom Moore, who was my first Chief on the Blakely has been an inspiration to me and can't thank him enough. Looking forward to seeing you for the reunion next year!

Hi to all those crazy active duty Blakely swabbies in OI division from '83 - '87, while I was aboard. There was Jim "Mac" McEwing, Tim Neely, Dan "Meat" DePontbriand, Nick "Nicolai Stefankovich" Stefanko, John "The Wad" Stuff, Steve Fields, along with a few others who were vigilant upon sailing the coasts of the US and its Island neighbors so the reservists could get away from their wives for a weekend or two. Great times were had by all...Thank God we had Captains who loved to party. I can't forget the CPO's like OSC Tibbs and Welch. I went from OSSA to OS2 on the Blakely and left the Nav with some great memories...Y'all got my E-mail, so drop a line or two in my direction.

Great site! Was an IC-man aboard the Blakely from 73-75. She was my first ship - I was transfered to the USS DuPont (DD-941) when the Blakely went in to the yards for ROH. I bought the Captains bridge chair and some sound powered phone stations, headsets, and handsets from the company that salvaged the Blakely last year. Plan to use the Old Mans chair behind my bar and the phones as an intercom for the house. Calm seas and following winds to all you former Blakely sailors! Gary

OK, I guess I am truly a guest here. I didn't served on the Blakely, although I had a friend from Great Lakes who did. I served on USS Buchanan (DDG-14) out of San Diego. Before that, I went to OS "A" school at Great Lakes in the spring of 1977. I made friends with a guy in transit barracks there, named Myron Alquist. We became fast friends. He went to BT "A" school and went to the Blakely, while I finished "A school, packed my seabag and headed for the west coast. We kept in touch for a couple of years, but I lost touch with him once I got out of the Navy in 1980. I'm involved with my own ship's association now(http://www.uss-buchanan-ddg14.org), and serve as the first President. We've been at it a couple of years now, and have over a 100 members. Any way, great site! I'll leave a search message on your "Lost shipmates" page for Myron. BZ you guys!
